The historical reports you refer to reflect the experimental state of our market up to eight years ago - an age in technology terms, before the term "cloud" was even invented, and before YouTube was founded.

Now YouTube has licensed our platform and the world is looking for cloud-based video and mobile services.

The strength of the Forbidden technology is creating many opportunities - the biggest published one being when NBC used our FORscene platform for much of their coverage of the world's biggest sporting event this summer.

I have no doubt of the potential of cloud-based video and mobile services - or, given the size and capability of our licensees, our potential to fulfil a major role in this area.

But if you don't want to contact me to discuss it, that is your prerogative.Stephen Streaterhttp://www.forbidden.co.uknoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6485044273441682294.post-64671168797009993812012-11-23T03:34:16.841-08:002012-11-23T03:34:16.841-08:00@stephen If I glance at the company reports on you...@stephen If I glance at the company reports on your corporate website I can see just how far off from reality your response is. What is most convenient/expedient for managements at the time is not necessarily the best asset allocation for their shareholders. Probly saved a Meg a few deals dealing with the lawyers over the break, but at an ultimate cost of $9bn of pain.

Break fee wouldn't have helped. Ostensibly it would be a disincentive for AUTN to switch to a competing bidder - except at the valuation there was no other bid. In practice it gives mgmt a convenient excuse to press on with the deal. One of the things which always surprised investors was when we pointed out that IBM owned all the components that Autonomy had (not only search but e-discovery, email archiving, content mgmt etc). The difference was simply that Autonomy were so much better at joining it all together and marketing it with a slick later of techno-babble on top.

To be fair many leading software companies were built by sales guys (Craig Conway at PSFT, Tom Siebel, Marc Benioff) - the whole point was they had a good pitch as well as good tech. Autonomy beat the competition hands down on the pitch (or simply it was just the sales culture?). The danger is of course when the medium becomes more important than the message.

The other thing I'm a bit sad about is I think that the idea of throwing IDOL search at the petabytes of enterprise data held in HP-built/EDS-managed servers is a sound one with obvious synergies. The issue of of course that HP couldn't execute their way out of a paper bag, even before this mess...

Br

JJon Tsenghttps://www.blogger.com/profile/01916149961326205602noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6485044273441682294.post-6595195204074963592012-11-22T08:21:50.029-08:002012-11-22T08:21:50.029-08:00The best and most comprehensive post I've read...The best and most comprehensive post I've read so far on the subject, Jon, thank you. Regarding the technology itself you've linked to a page describing their 'unique combination of technologies' - however as most people in the sector knew, there wasn't anything unique about it (I've blogged about this recently). Bayesian search engines existed before Autonomy and there are even open source examples. Charlie Hullhttp://www.flax.co.uk/blognoreply@blogger.com
